Currency in Oslo

The official currency in Oslo is the Norwegian kroner (kr) and its symbol is NOK (norsk krone). Although it's always useful to have local money in cash, you can pay by card at most places.

Each Norwegian krone is divided into 100 øre, but coins of this amount no longer exist.

Notes and coins

In Oslo, you'll find notes of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 NOK, and coins of 1, 5, 10 and 20 krone.

Cash or card?

The use of credit cards is very common in Norway and you won't have any issues in most establishments. Some small bars or buses that operate outside the centre of Oslo may be an exception.

Where to change money

Unlike other capital cities, Oslo doesn't have many currency exchange spots in the city. If you want to change your currency for local money, the best option is to check with your bank the commission for withdrawing money in a foreign currency and consider withdrawing money from ATMs in Oslo.

If you want to exchange euros or other currencies for Norwegian kroner, you can also go to specialised currency exchange centres, such as Ria, Money Exchange Skandinavia or Forex Bank.

You can also change money at the Tourist Information Centre in Oslo (next to the central Station), at the airport and at some hotels.
