Oslo Opera House
Oslo's skyline would not be the same without one of its most iconic buildings: the Opera House. This marble building that seems to emerge from the water has become one of the most visited monuments in the capital.
In 2008, the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta revolutionised the architecture of the Norwegian capital by constructing a building that rises upwards out of the North Sea. The Oslo Opera and Ballet has become the city's main cultural centre and one of its most iconic landmarks.
This performing arts centre consists of a main auditorium, with seating for 1,360 guests, a stage 16 metres (52 feet) below sea level, and a second auditorium that can seat about 400 people.
What's so special about it?
One of the most impressive things about the Oslo Opera House is its location. The building stands on the shores of the North Sea, facing the Norwegian fjord, making it a perfect place to enjoy calm and scenic views.
The architecture of the Oslo Opera House is avant-garde, with the façade entirely covered in marble and glass, giving the space an extra essence of harmony and tranquillity. It's very common to see sportsmen walking up and down the ramp of the Opera House, groups of friends sitting by the sea or tourists strolling along the roof.
Inside the Opera House
Although what is really special about the Opera House is its exterior, you can also take the opportunity to go inside and see its carefully decorated interior. The walls of the main foyer are covered with oak wood and the large window at the top fills this space with light and tranquility.
The terrace
One of the best viewpoints in the city can be found on the roof of the Oslo Opera House. Thanks to the staggered shape of the building, you can walk up to the top and enjoy unique views of the Norwegian fjord, the Akershus fortress, Museum Island and the Bjorvika district.
