Fram Museum
The Fram Museum tells the exciting adventure story of Norwegian polar navigation through the Fram ship, built in 1892. The ship served on three major polar expeditions, going further north and further south than any other ship in history.
The museum's exhibits revolve around the imposing Fram, one of the world's strongest wooden ships, which was used for 3 important polar expeditions that led to the conquest of the Poles and marked the history of Oslo.
The Fram's best-known expedition was its participation in a race to the South Pole when its teams of explorers achieved worldwide fame, while its opponents failed to survive the return journey.
This was to be the last great adventure of the Fram, which was forced to remain anchored until 1935, when the museum was built to tell its story.
A voyage onboard the Fram
In the museum, you can climb aboard the Fram to discover its interior, imagining what daily life on board was like as you walk through the cabins, boiler room and deck.
The exhibitions show the daring and exploratory nature of man by narrating the adventures that took place during the exploration of the Poles. You can see old photographs as well as numerous original objects that are intact and document the way of life of the explorers during their voyages.
The museum includes a tour through an ice passageway that allows you to immerse yourself in the experience, as well as some projections that tell the story of the ship. You can also enjoy an audiovisual show that simulates the Northern Lights.
A visual and interactive museum
The Fram Museum is very comprehensive, interesting and easy to navigate, so we have no hesitation in recommending a visit during a trip to Oslo.
If you like museums related to the maritime world, you can also take advantage of your visit to the Bygdøy peninsula to see the Viking Ship Museum and the Kon-Tiki Museum.
