The Weather in Oslo
Oslo has the same humid climate as its Nordic neighbours, with a maximum of 20°C (68ºF) in the summer and an average of -7°C (20ºF) in the winter months. Therefore, you should be aware of the season when packing your suitcase.
Oslo in Winter
Winter in Oslo is a challenge for any visitors from warm or mild countries. The streets of the Norwegian capital are full of snow all winter and there are noticeably reduced hours of light. In addition, temperates rarely surpass -7°C (20ºF).
But the cold has its advantages. The chances of seeing the Northern Lights in Oslo are highest between January and March. Plus, the Norwegian capital becomes the perfect place for winter sports, such as skiing, ice-skating and sledging.
Oslo in Summer
The summers in Oslo are fresh, with average temperatures between 18 and 20°C (64 - 68ºF) during June, July and August. In recent years, it has become more common to experience heat waves in the city, with temperatures reaching around 30ºC (86ºF).
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor events in Oslo. Furthermore, you can witness the midnight sun, a natural phenomenon that means that the city is in daylight for up to 18 hours a day.
The best time of the year to visit Oslo
Do you prefer the cold or the heat? What about light or dark? Oslo offers two completely different sides to itself depending on what you're looking for. The months of June and July are best for making the most of daylight in the capital.
However, if you don't mind the cold in Oslo and want to see the Northern Lights or enjoy some winter sports, it's best to visit Oslo in the months between January and March. As the famous Norwegian proverb says, “There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing".
