Vigeland Park

With more than one million visitors a year, Vigeland Park is one of the main attractions in the country and one of the most beloved areas of Oslo for tourists and locals alike.

The well-known architect Gustav Vigeland devoted 20 years to what was to be his life's work, sculpting figures in the open air in what was once the garden of his house, now part of the park. In addition to sculpting all the pieces, Vigeland was responsible for every detail of the park's design.

A stroll through the park

The huge park covers 32 hectares and its most striking features include a large bronze fountain with six giants holding a bowl from which water flows and a granite bridge that's framed by 58 impressive bronze figures.

One of the most controversial sculptures in the park is that of the angry child (Sinnataggen), shown crying with his mouth open as he kicks his feet. It has been attacked several times, appearing in a rubbish bin or covered in paint, but its fame is such that it has even appeared on postcards and souvenirs of the city.

The park's more than 200 sculptures depict human figures capable of conveying different moods at different times of life. This means that in one way or another, all visitors can identify with the works of art.

A curious detail about the wrought-iron gates through which you enter the park is that they have human figures that can be seen from the front on one side and from the back on the other side.

A must-see!

Vigeland Park is an authentic open-air museum and is a very peaceful and pleasant space, making it the ideal choice if you'd like a couple of hours of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
